Library Instruction Activities: Use Info

Presenting Research

Demystifying Wikipedia

  • Work with a professor to select a list of Wikipedia articles on a topic the class has been studying
  • Have students work in groups of 2-3
  • Ask them to read their assigned Wikipedia article, and either research statements that have been flagged as 'citation needed,' identify statements that would be stronger with a citation, or conduct additional research on something related that is not covered in the Wikipedia article

There could be many variations on this activity.  This could be a follow-up session after students are introduced to disciplinary databases, or this could be a series of instruction sessions, or a partnership that lasts the course of a semester (depending on the amount of research needed).

See this article for an example.
