One of the service that patrons of the library really take advantage of is Thursdays@theLibrary. Thursdays is a tradition that dates back to the 2005-2006 school year, and it has grown from serving simply seasonal beverages to now presenting a larger array of treats, such as pastries, desserts, and a variety of hot drinks.
Thursdays starts at 9am and goes on until about 11am, and the event is made possible by donation of time, food and drink, and other supplies from a variety of sources, not just the library. The Father Ray Herman Peace and Justice Center provides Free Trade coffee that many different students, faculty, and staff members enjoy after their early classes. The bakery items, fruit, and other produce is provided by a very generous and anonymous donor; the fruit is a newer addition to Thursdays, but many patrons love it. Thursdays@theLibrary also helps prevent food waste by using donated bakery items that are often “seconds” or nearing the end of their “sell by” dates. After sorting through the usable products, the library staff sets out an array of different treats for the patrons to enjoy. And donations towards paper goods used each week are appreciated, as is patron efforts to limit waste by using their own reusable cups to limit the use of disposable goods.
The main reason we provide Thursdays@theLibrary is because part of our mission statement here is to build community, and after seeing the large crowds that gather in the common area Thursday mornings, it’s easy to see an achievement of that part of our mission. There’s something for everyone at Thursdays, not just food and drink, but also conversation and community to be made. Make sure to stop by!
