Center for Dubuque History & Loras College Archives: Visiting the Collection

The Center for Dubuque History and Loras College Archives are open by appointment when the MARC is open. The archivist is typically available between 10 and 5, but can meet outside of those times. To make an appointment:

Please note that same-day appointments are unlikely to be available.


While an appointment is necessary to access materials in the archives, many resources do not require an appointment to access including:

  • The Obituary File: an index to all obituaries published in the Telegraph Herald and other local newspapers
  • The Microfilm Collection contains:
    • The Telegraph Herald and other local newspapers
    • Census records from 1840-1930 for Iowa
    • Dubuque City/County Directories (also available online or in the Library collection 917.77391 T235H)
    • Dubuque City Council proceedings.
    • Dubuque County militia records
    • Dubuque County court records
    • Dubuque County tax lists
    • Luxemburger Gazette
  • Dubuque histories in the Library collection (4th Floor)
  • Loras College Yearbooks (2nd floor 378.777P C723P)
  • Loras College histories and publications (2nd floor)
  • Plat and insurance maps (on gray filing cabinets)
  • Early birds-eye maps (hanging on walls)
