Picture of Microfilm ReaderThere are many resources available to you as patrons of the Loras College Library, but compared to our other well-known resources like books, movies, and online databases, the microfilm machines can seem a bit more daunting to those who have never used them before.  However, once you take the time to figure them out, they can be easy enough to navigate.  Everything from past Telegraph Herald articles to censuses to the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Papers from 1959-1972 is provided in our large collection of microfilm.  Microfilm can be really valuable to you for research and is just a dime to print or free for you to download onto your own flash drive!  Below are some brief instructions for how to print from the microfilm machines to get you started so you can really take advantage of this resource.

Step 1: Turn on the machine and open the glass plate.  After doing this, you can insert your microfilm.

Step 2: Replace the glass plate and adjust the magnifying lens and focus to clarify the image.  Remember, if it’s not readable on the screen, it will not be readable on your copy!

Step 3: Use the “forward” and “fast-forward buttons” to find an area you wish to scan.

Step 4: Once you’ve found your desired area and made sure that it’s readable, insert one dime, and one dime only!  The machine cannot register more than one coin at a time, and you will not get change back if you insert more than ten cents.

Step 6: Rewind the film when you’re done with it, and put it back in the box.  No need to reshelve it!  Just place the box on top of the microfilm cabinets where you found it, and we’ll take care of the rest.
