Tolkien Reading Day

Join us at Noon on Thursday, March 25 (the date of the downfall of Sauron and the fall of Barad-dûr, of course) for Tolkien Reading Day, which was conceived by the Tolkien Society since 2003 to celebrate the works of J.R.R. Tolkien by reading from them. JRR Tolkien was the author of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and other works of fantasy and fairy tale, and is considered by many to be the father of modern fantasy and one of the great authors of the 20th century.  Join us for a fun break as we listen, laugh, and talk about a few favorite passages.  We will even have a magician to show us some magic! Tolkien Reading Day at Loras is a collaboration between the Library and Professor John Eby.

The event will be online (via zoom) Click here to join the event, or join us live in the 3rd floor Commons of the Library (Masks and social distancing required).

graphic announcementIncluding a PowerPoint is a great way to help your audience understand what you’re speaking about and keep everyone on track, but we’ve all sat through presentations where the PowerPoint hurt the presentation instead of helping it. Hybrid classes and Zoom make the need for an effective PowerPoint even more essential as your audience can’t focus on you.

During the Crafting Effective PowerPoints session, we’ll discuss some of the common issues with presentations such as:

  • too many words,
  • too few words,
  • text that’s difficult to read,
  • animations that distract,
  • and images that you can’t see.

I’ll also address some issue that are unique to Zoom. Once we’ve identified the issues, I’ll show you easy ways to avoid them and craft a PowerPoint that supports your message. Sign up at: https://loras.libcal.com/calendar/events/powerpoint
