How to Search JSTOR

Narrowing & Limiting

If your initial search results in too many items, or items that are off-topic, then it may be useful to narrow your results by type of publication, or by one or more academic disciplines.

Narrow by Discipline

  1. On the JSTOR homepage, choose 'advanced search' from the 'Search' tab at the top of the page.
  2. Enter your search terms in the boxes at the top of the page, and then scroll down to the 'Narrow by Discipline and/or Publication Title.' Choose two or three discipline that will provide an appropriate focus for your search.

Narrow to Specific Journals

  1. By clicking the plus sign (+) next to each discipline name, a list of all the journals associated with that discipline will appear.
  2. You can narrow your search to a specific journal or journals by checking the boxes next to the journal titles.
